Gardeners East Barnet Health and Safety Policy

This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures followed by Gardeners East Barnet to protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. Our aim is to deliver professional gardening and grounds care services while preventing accidents, injuries and ill health.

Policy Statement

Gardeners East Barnet is committed to maintaining high standards of health and safety across all gardening and landscaping activities. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to provide safe systems of work, safe equipment, appropriate information, instruction and training, and a working environment that minimises risks arising from our operations.

We recognise our duties under relevant health and safety legislation and strive not only to comply with legal requirements but to continually improve our practices. Every worker is expected to take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Responsibilities

The overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management. Management will:

Plan work so that risks are identified and controlled before tasks begin. Provide and maintain suitable tools, machinery and personal protective equipment. Ensure that staff receive appropriate health and safety information, instruction and training for the tasks they undertake. Monitor performance and investigate accidents, incidents and near misses to prevent recurrence. Review this policy periodically and update it when necessary.

Employees and contractors are responsible for:

Working safely, following all instructions and site rules. Using equipment correctly and not misusing anything provided for health and safety. Wearing the personal protective equipment provided for specific tasks. Reporting hazards, defects, near misses or incidents without delay. Cooperating fully with any investigation, training or health and safety initiative.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before starting gardening or landscaping work, appropriate risk assessments will be carried out to identify potential hazards and evaluate the level of risk. These assessments will consider the nature of the work, the location, the tools and machinery used, and the presence of clients, visitors, neighbours or members of the public.

Safe working procedures will be developed and communicated to staff. Where necessary, site specific rules and controls will be put in place, such as restricted access zones, barriers or warning signs. Risk assessments and methods of work will be reviewed whenever conditions change or after any significant incident.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment

Gardeners East Barnet will ensure that gardening tools, power equipment, machinery and vehicles are suitable for their intended purpose and are maintained in a safe condition. All equipment will be inspected regularly and removed from service if found to be defective or unsafe.

Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered machinery such as mowers, trimmers, blowers and cutting equipment. Instructions from manufacturers will always be followed. Guards, safety devices and emergency stops must never be removed, bypassed or disabled. Equipment will be transported, loaded and unloaded carefully to prevent injury or damage.

Personal Protective Equipment

Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided free of charge where risks cannot be sufficiently controlled by other means. Depending on the work being carried out, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection or protective clothing.

Workers must use the specified protective equipment for each task and must report any loss, damage or defect so it can be repaired or replaced. Equipment must be stored correctly and kept clean to ensure that it remains effective.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of injury, we will plan work to avoid or minimise heavy manual handling where possible, using mechanical aids or team lifts when necessary.

Staff will receive guidance on good manual handling techniques, including assessing loads before lifting, keeping loads close to the body, avoiding twisting and taking regular breaks from repetitive tasks such as digging, pruning or hedge cutting.

Chemicals, Fertilisers and Substances

Where chemicals, fertilisers, fuels or other hazardous substances are used, they will be stored, handled and applied in accordance with safety data sheets and legal requirements. Only trained personnel may use such substances, and they must follow all instructions about dilution, application methods, protective equipment and disposal.

Containers will be clearly labelled, kept secure and never reused for other purposes. Measures will be in place to prevent spills, contamination of soil or water, and exposure to clients, the public and wildlife as far as is reasonably practicable.

Environmental and Public Safety

In addition to protecting workers, Gardeners East Barnet is committed to considering the safety of clients, neighbours, visitors and passers-by. Work areas will be kept as tidy as practicable, with tools, hoses and machinery positioned to minimise trip and impact hazards.

When using powered equipment or carrying out noisy or disruptive work, consideration will be given to timing and safe distances. Where necessary, temporary barriers or warning signs will be used to keep the public away from hazardous areas such as tree work, spraying or use of cutting machinery.

Training, Information and Supervision

All staff will receive induction training covering general health and safety arrangements, emergency procedures and the safe use of common tools and equipment. Additional task specific training will be provided where needed, such as safe use of powered machinery, working at height or handling chemicals.

Supervision will be provided appropriate to the level of risk and the experience of the workers involved. Instructions will be clear and understood before work begins. Refresher training will be arranged when changes occur or where improvements are identified.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as possible so that appropriate first aid, follow up and investigation can take place. Records will be kept and reviewed to identify patterns and opportunities for improvement.

Suitable first aid arrangements will be in place, including access to first aid supplies and trained first aiders where required. Emergency procedures for fire, serious injury, chemical spills or other significant events will be communicated to staff and, where relevant, to clients.

Monitoring and Review

Gardeners East Barnet will monitor its health and safety performance through regular inspections, equipment checks, feedback from staff and clients, and review of incident records. Where shortcomings are identified, corrective and preventive actions will be taken promptly.

This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes to operations, legislation or recognised best practice. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff so that everyone understands their responsibilities and the standards expected.

By working together and following this policy, Gardeners East Barnet seeks to maintain a safe, healthy and professional gardening service for clients and communities in our service area.
